Social Media has undoubtedly improved our way of communication. From the Hollywood movies we enjoy to the local and international news we view, social media has captured a piece of our minds that involves concise communication and has nurtured it through the years. I write this paper with the intent to inform you on certain methods the media increases our level of communication and inspires us to do it the right way.
Before I present to you the first method social media presents to us, we must first establish the fact that social media is international—and so are the majority of the websites. Therefore, I am confident when I state the first method which is that social media more often than not uses the universal language—English. Of course, there are several articles that are written in the country’s main language. But it is certain that English has wormed its way to every civilized organization. And since most websites that are often used are international, the writer is greatly encouraged to use the universal language. Because of that fact, the writer, influenced and surrounded by English literature, is likely to compose their message in English in order to appear well-educated and knowledgeable. The writer would also then be challenged to learn new words, study new forms or strategies in writing in order to have that confident feeling when he or she presses the “post” button.
Now the second method social media improves our communication skills is through its public reach. Whatever the writer posts, it is almost always available to a massive array of readers. A simple post in Twitter will end up being tweeted in several different countries and even other continents if the post appears to be filled with good content, wit and humor. An article that is informative and educational will end up jumping from an American’s Facebook post to a Filipino’s homepage. My point here is that whatever is posted in social media has an increasing possibility of being broadcasted to the public. It is the fastest medium used to communicate. So, it is also correct to assume that whatever the writer will post in public, he or she would want several people to read about it. Therefore, to avoid embarrassment, the writer will make certain that whatever he or she uploads in the web is in correct grammar.
And the third and last method I will present to you is that social media progresses our communicative capabilities through the spreading of several popular posts and articles. A good example of such articles are news on popular celebrities. Latest updates on how the actors’ lives are going usually interests the public especially when it pertains to whom they idolize. One thing about such journalistic articles is that even though they seek to entertain you, their main goal is to inform you; they can do both. Therefore, they are more inclined to being clear rather than being comical. And social media practically shoves such articles that are usually written in a refined manner and in logical order into our very eyes, providing us with excellent examples of what clear and concise writing is.
Social media is now being used on a daily basis to the extent of that most people can’t through the day without logging in to Facebook, Tweeting their activities for that certain day, blogging their experiences on Tumbler, advertising products or services on a website or even just posting a selfie on Instagram. It has now become a ‘part-of-the-day-routine’ in people’s lives that one just can’t control the use of it. And although not all the posts or articles have good reviews in the areas of correct grammar and content, they can be used as examples as to how each individual should be inspired to write or post appropriately and correctly.
So, with the influence of correct and proper grammar, the determination to appear educated and refined, and several examples of brilliant literature, social media has certainly played a great role in teaching us how to express ourselves effectively.
Hence, the viewing of social media should be encouraged and celebrated for in a lot of ways, it increases our skills in communication.
